Dr. Charlotte Yezhou Tan has taught at both private studio and collegiate levels. Since 1997 she has been teaching private students at a variety of ages, ranging from 4 to 70. She was also a certified teacher for YAMAHA Junior Course. Additionally, Dr. Tan taught at Middle School's Music Enrichment Programs in Houston (TX) and Cleveland (OH). In her own piano studio, her students have achieved many accomplishments, including performance at various shows, prizes from competitions and Grade Certificates at the most renown examination board ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music). In addition, Dr. Tan was appointed as Associate Instructor at the University of Houston, teaching Class Piano I-IV, as well as a full-time Staff Pianist at the Central University of Florida. Since 2020, she has been the member of Music Teacher National Association (MTNA).
Dr. Charlotte employs result-oriented method in her teaching. She not only customizes each lesson content but also adapts course progress based on students' ages, goals, abilities, and preferences. Her lesson contains multiple components, including repertoire, technique, theory, and musical appreciation. As a well-rounded music educator, Dr. Tan aims to inspire students’ curiosities as well as to develop and shape their own approaches to piano learning. It is proven that students’ motivation, learning independence, abstract thinking, perseverance, self-discipline, and stress resistance become extremely beneficial for both of their piano and academic accomplishment.
Upon request, Dr. Charlotte can prepare students for competition, grade certificate, and local performance. Related music theory instruction is also available for special request. For optimal results of taking piano lessons, all students should practice daily at no less than 20-30 minutes. For students who like to progress faster, one-hour daily practice is highly recommended, especially for the ones who are older than 7-year-old. According to students’ focus spans, the ones younger than 6-year-old should only take lesson of 30 minutes weekly; students who are 6 or older than 6 are required to take lesson of minimum 45 minutes weekly. High school students and amateur adults can take bi-weekly lesson at no less than one hour.
Regarding the method books, Faber and Thompson are recommended for beginners with supplemental books, such as Faber Classical/Fun time/Jazz series. Starting from intermediate level, method books including Hanon, Beyer, Czerny 599, 849, 740, Bach for Beginner, Sonatinas, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven sonatas, and classical repertoire. Other genres, such as pop songs, movie tracks can also be used upon students' request.
Why do you need to find your child a GOOD piano teacher who knows what she/he is doing?
Piano learning, regardless of purposes, can be tricky. It is a very complicated system in which students can only see a little of the system, but they need someone with special expertise to educate and nurture them. Some students may say they only want to cultivate it as a hobby; some may say they want to learn how to play a few songs; some may hope to accomplishment certain things or build a strong ECA (extra-curricular activity) before going to college. No matter in which circumstances you are, you need a good piano teacher who can take you there and be honest with you for what you need in this journey. Otherwise, if you follow wrong instruction, false learning sequence, or poor delivery of content, you are very likely to be ended up with bad habit, hand injury, self-doubt, loss of motivation and so on. As a result, you would not get what you want out of your TIME and MONEY investments.
I have seen lots of students who transferred from another studio with all sorts of problems and difficulties. I have taken a transferring student, who developed multiple serious problems within three months of studying with another teacher, including tight hand-position, stiff finger, wrong learning method and so on. Pretty much everything he learned before needed to be redone completely, and that was HARD for both of us. I have also taken a highly intelligent student, who transferred from a fine teacher, who did not explore her potential but taught nothing wrong. In such case, the transition was a totally blessing and she only needed to strengthen and develop further. After two years, she bloomed amazingly as she made astonishing progress and improvement, and more importantly, she became highly motivated to music making.
I always compare piano teacher to medical doctor. A good piano teacher or a doctor can save you TIME and MONEY by diagnosing each problem in a correct way and giving you the best treatment plan. After all, they use their expertise, skills, and experiences to help you to achieve what you want.
